Climb, up and up, go higher. Is that how you view a career? Like a ladder? Rung after rung moving through the ranks? This point of view may have helped motivate you early on when your career path was clear, free from distractions and you made decisions that only affected you.
What happens when you take a career break?
Today your reality is that your maternity leave is coming an end or after being at home for a few years, you’re ready to go back to work. Thinking that you need to follow that “linear” career model and start from the bottom? Let me tell you, there’s a better way.
Start by asking yourself: are your interests the same? How have your most recent experiences reshaped you and your actions? I know becoming a mom changed me and more so my priorities. I had different expectations and thoughts about what I would consider fulfilling work. Chances are your priorities have changed too.
So free yourself from thinking that your career must be linear and instead think of it the way Sheryl Sandberg describes it as “a jungle gym”. A career that can go left or right. Pivot and take you down paths that you didn’t even know that would interest you.
When you apply a small change like this in your perspective, it can open a whole other world of possibilities and options. Can you feel the pressure going down? Feels better already, doesn’t it?
